Our Green Awards

Villa Resorts has demonstrated an unwavering commitment towards saving energy and water, removal of single-use plastics, recycling and progressing towards carbon neutrality at each one of our resorts. Our prestigious Green Key certifications demonstrate our collective efforts to develop an environmentally friendly, sustainable and responsible business for each one of our beautiful islands in the Maldives.

In January 2023, Villa Nautica was awarded the prestigious International Environmental Green Key Award, a leading standard of excellence within the tourism industry. Villa Nautica joins Villa Park and Royal Island, who received Green Key Awards in March 2022.

In October 2022, our eco-luxury resort, Villa Park was awarded the Maldives Leading Green Resort in the Indian Ocean. Recognized globally as the ultimate hallmark of excellence in the tourism industry, the environmental award is testament to Villa Park’s sustainable way of life and forward-thinking environmental initiatives and ocean conservation.

The eco-friendly resort generates solar energy with over 2 400 solar panels supplying clean renewable energy and drastically helping to reduce the carbon footprint. This further affirms the resort’s best practice of environmental sustainability in alignment with the prestigious Green Key certification. Villa Park was also recently awarded Leading Sustainable Honeymoon Resort in the Marie Claire UK Sustainability awards.

Energy efficiency and paperless initiatives

As part of our commitment to the environment, we have integrated energy-saving strategies, efficient waste management and eco-friendly technologies to reduce energy consumption across all resorts. To educate and inform, we regularly hold awareness programmes for both employees and guests on the importance of reducing water consumption and of the energy saving methods used at the resorts. We believe in the power of change and raising awareness to actively take care of our planet for future generations.

In addition to energy and water-saving initiatives, our DiveOceanus dive centres are 100% paperless, with all training material, administration forms and material provided to guests digitally.

Eco-Conscious Energy

Villa Nautica and Villa Park resorts prioritize sustainability with extensive solar panel projects. Villa Nautica has 2,621 solar panels, generating 4,500-5,000 units of daily electricity and significantly reducing diesel consumption and CO2 emissions. Villa Park features 2,464 marine-grade photovoltaic solar panels, producing 3,574-4,076 kWh of solar energy daily. Plans for expansion include lagoon floating solar panels and increased coverage, aiming to switch off generators and further adopt renewable energy.

Self-sufficient water production

All of our islands harvest and process rainwater with on-site treatment centres. We offer reusable glass bottles, even for our excursions. Producing our own drinkable water enables us to avoid plastic bottles, which are a constant danger to the Maldives' wildlife and marine life.

We also donate plastic for recycling in a partnership with Parley for the Oceans – an organization that addresses major threats to our oceans and fights for environmental protection through recycling initiatives and global projects.

Conserving coral reefs

The coral reefs surrounding our resorts are part of the eighth largest reef system in the world. They're also home to a variety of endangered marine species. In recent years, climate change and coral reef bleaching have damaged large portions of the Maldives' ecosystems, so working to maintain what's left is vital. Reef cleaning is done regularly and resort guests are welcome to join in this collaborative effort.

Cleaning up our coastline

The pristine white beaches and secluded sandbanks nestled in crystal-clear turquoise lagoons are synonymous with the natural beauty of our tropical archipelago. Our collection of resorts have some of the most idyllic white sandy beaches and uninterrupted shorelines in the Maldives. Our aim is to leave nothing but our footprints behind, so all of our resorts pledge to protect the natural environment with several key initiatives, including regular clean-ups on the islands and nearby sandbanks, and planting coconut saplings for a greener and brighter future.

Creating a sanctuary for migratory guests

The dense vegetation that covers Villa Park is home to various migratory birds. While they can be seen across the island, they're easiest to spot at their sanctuary, close to the botanical gardens. We leave this area to grow naturally, creating a rich, nurturing environment for our migratory guests. Royal Island is located in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Baa Atoll, which is home to a variety of tropical birds and wildlife.

Growing organic food gardens

Villa Park produces more than 20 000 coconuts per month, and a wide variety of tropical fruits, vegetables and herbs are picked daily for resort restaurants. To protect the biodiversity of the islands, our gardeners only use organic pesticides.

Championing sustainable fishing

Fishing in the Maldives has a long history and is an integral part of the country's culture. The Maldives maintains a sustainable fishing industry with most fish, including tuna, caught by the traditional pole-and-line method. Protecting our oceans is the main priority and preserving marine biodiversity is critical to people's health and our planet. We believe that careful management of our essential resources and marine protected areas is a key feature of a sustainable future.

In addition to pole-and-line fishing, we prioritize sustainable lobster fishing in accordance with size criteria. It is part of our core commitment to preserving the Maldives' ecosystems and biodiversity for the future.
